A portable power station is a battery, inverter and charge controller in one box. At camp it runs a 12V fridge, charges phones and cameras, and powers lights without wiring anything into the vehicle. This guide lists the power stations in the TrailReady catalog from lowest to highest current price. It compares published specs and prices only.
Sizing it
Capacity is measured in watt-hours (Wh). A rough way to size it: take your fridge's average draw in watts × 24 hours, add phones and lights, then add 20–30% for inverter losses and cloudy days. Many 12V fridges average in the tens of watts once they're cold, so a ~1,000 Wh unit often covers a fridge for a day or more. Check your fridge's published numbers.
Battery chemistry: LiFePO4 (LFP) packs are heavier but rated for more charge cycles.
Solar input: the max solar watts decides how fast you can refill off-grid.
12V output: a regulated 12V car socket is what most fridges plug into.
Weight: big units get heavy fast, so check before you plan to carry one.
