Best Rooftop Tents for a Toyota Tacoma
On a Tacoma, the bed rack sets the limit more often than the tent does. The 16 Tacoma bed racks in our catalog that publish a dynamic (moving) load rating run from 300 lb to 500 lb. Every tent we list with a published weight, up to the 279 lb Alu-Cab RT-4S 4 Sleeper Rooftop Tent, clears even the 300 lb racks on paper. So the real question isn't whether a tent fits. It's how much rating it leaves for everything else that ends up on the rack.
Our pick for most owners: a tent around 125 lb or less on a rack rated 400 lb or more. That leaves at least 275 lb for traction boards, a water can, an awning and the mounting hardware. 13 of the 16 rated Tacoma racks meet that bar, and 11 tents do. The Front Runner Roof Top Tent is the value standout at a published 93 lb for $1,091.09. The Inspired Overland Trailpeak is the lightest we list at 84 lb, but it costs $1,899. If you want a hardshell, the Inspired Overland Carbonlite-X also weighs 93 lb ($3,499), and the Freespirit Aspen Lite Standard V3 clamshell is 100 lb ($2,250).
How we did the math
We compared each tent's published weight against each rack's published dynamic rating, which is what applies while you're driving. Several makers publish two dynamic numbers. Leitner's ACS Forged is 800 lb on-road and 400 lb off-road. Xtrusion's XBRS bed bars are 800 and 400, and Kuat's Ibex is 600 and 300. We always use the off-road figure, because Southwest washboard and ledges are exactly what that number is for.
Here's what thin margins look like. The OVS XD Lhotse weighs a published 230 lb. On the 300 lb Tuwa Pro Shiprock Mid, that leaves 70 lb, and the tent's mounting hardware comes out of that before any recovery gear does. It works on paper. It just doesn't leave room for much else.
Parked, the static rating covers the tent, the people inside and the bedding. The Body Armor 4x4 Pro Series and the Tuwa Pro both publish 800 lb static. Take away a 230 lb tent and you have 570 lb for two sleepers and their gear. Cali Raised lists its Tacoma rack at 1,500 lb static "tested" but 750 lb "recommended". We use the 750.
Don't forget payload. The rack, tent, gear and passengers all count against the truck's payload, printed on the tire and loading placard in the driver's door jamb. Only two of the rated Tacoma racks publish their own weight: the Sherpa PAK rack-height at about 65 lb and the Leitner ACS Forged at 85 lb.
If you want to keep the bed usable
If the Tacoma still has to haul a dirt bike or a load of firewood, how the rack shares the bed matters as much as its rating. Three ways to go:
- Low bed bars. Xtrusion's XBRS sits 6 or 8 inches tall, carries 400 lb off-road, 800 lb on-road and 1,500 lb static, and is $732. It's the cheapest rated option on the Tacoma list. The trade-off is that your cargo shares the space under the tent.
- Racks built around a bed cover. The Xtrusion XTR1 for Retrax XR covers ($1,549.99, 450 lb off-road) lets you keep a lockable bed. The XTR3 for soft-topper covers ($2,099.99, 500 lb) and the upTOP TRUSS soft-top rack ($1,274, 400 lb) do the same with soft toppers.
- The budget full rack. Cali Raised's 2005–2023 and 2024+ Tacoma racks publish 400 lb dynamic for $849.99. That's the same off-road number as the Leitner ACS Forged at $1,950. What the extra money buys with Leitner is a much higher static rating (1,400 lb vs 750 lb recommended) and a published on-road figure.

It depends on the rack. The 16 Tacoma bed racks we list with a published dynamic (moving) rating run from 300 lb to 500 lb. Where a maker publishes both on-road and off-road numbers, we use the lower off-road one. The tent plus anything else on the rack has to stay at or under that number.
What's the lightest rooftop tent for a Tacoma?
Of the tents we list with a published weight, the lightest is the Inspired Overland Trailpeak Rooftop Tent at 84 lb. Lighter tents leave more of the rack's rating for other gear.
Can I put a rooftop tent on the Tacoma's roof instead?
Possibly, but you need the roof rack's rating and Toyota's roof load limit for your model year, which is in the owner's manual. The one Tacoma roof rack listing in our catalog publishes a dynamic rating higher than its static rating, which doesn't add up, so we don't use its numbers.
